Artist talk and Book Signing by Nell Painter

  • Tuesday, March 5, 2019
  • Carroll Room, Campus Center, Smith College, 6:30 PM
  • Nell Painter will speak about her book, Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over, and sign copies. SCMA recently acquired a series of eight prints by Nell Painter entitled, You Say This Can't Really Be America, 2017. These art works are currently on view on the Lower Level of the museum. Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school in her 60s to earn a BFA and MFA in painting.
In Old in Art School, she travels from Newark, NJ to the Rhode Island School of Design (where she earned an MFA in painting in 2011); finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful demands of a life fully lived.
Nell Painter is Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University. She lives and works in Newark, New Jersey.

This program is free and open to all | No reservations necessary | Presented in collaboration with the Smith College Narratives Project, part of Smith's Wurtele Center for Leadership
