Join Aprile Gallant, exhibition curator and curator of prints, drawings and photographs, for a preview of the new exhibition, When in Rome: Prints & Photographs, 1550-1900. The exhibition examines the many ways the city of Rome has been pictured over time, from sixteenth-century engravings to nineteenth-century photographs. When in Rome includes more than 50 engravings, etchings, and photographs, focusing on a select number of emblematic monuments—both ancient and Renaissance—which have come to represent Rome in the popular imagination.
When in Rome is the realization of SCMA’s participation in the Yale University Art Gallery’s Arthur Ross Collection sharing initiative. It was inspired by the outstanding impressions of prints by the eighteenth-century Italian Giambattista Piranesi (1720–1778) in the Arthur Ross Collection.
The exhibition has been supported by the Charlotte Frank Rabb, class of 1935, Fund, the Publications and Research Fund, the Carlyn Steiner '67 and George Steiner Endowed Fund, in honor of Joan Smith Koch, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a State Agency.
