  • In conjunction with the special exhibition Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment. In her lecture Art and Race During the Enlightenment in France, Anne Lafont (Director of Studies, Center for History and Theory of the Arts, EHESS, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) speaks about art and race during the Enlightenment with a particular focus on the Atlantic revolutions and the pictorial imagination of the new citizen and people of color. Professor Lafont is the author of L’art et la race. L’Africain (tout) contre l’œil des Lumières, 2018. Co-sponsored by Smith College Museum of Art, the Lecture Committee, and French Studies.

Drawing to Look Closely—A figure drawing workshop in the Sharrer exhibition

  • A DANGEROUS WOMAN Subversion & Surrealism in the Art of Honoré Sharrer

    Katy Schneider, artist/guest instructor

    Join artist Katy Schneider to learn or polish sketching and drawing skills and participate in a facilitated discussion and drawing exercises designed to encourage careful looking at Honoré Sharrer’s work. Explore gesture, proportion, perspective and volume while working from a nude model as well as Sharrer's paintings.

    Katy Schneider teaches drawing and painting at Smith College. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim and an N.E.A. fellowship, and awards from the National Academy of Design and the Academy of Arts and Letters. Focusing on themes related to her upbringing — making the most of a small space, organizing chaos, and uncovering family dynamics — her work is in numerous collections including The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the New Britain Museum and SCMA.
