MEMBERS' GALLERY TALK: Dislocation | Urban Experience Exhibition

  • Wednesday, December 9, 2015
  • Museum of Art
  • 2–3 PM

The inaugural exhibition in the Carol T. Christ Asian Art Gallery

Led by guest curator Samuel C. Morse Howard M. and professor Martha P. Mitchell, Amherst College and Edwin O. Reischauer Visiting Professor, Harvard University

Today, East Asia is home to some of the largest cities on the planet. Dislocation/Urban Experience features the photographs of contemporary artists from China, Japan, and Korea who have come of age during a period of rapid and unchecked urbanization at a scale that is without precedent.

These photographers depict the extreme pressures and contradictions of life in East Asia's mega-cities. Family relations dissolve as people move into the cities and leave their local towns and villages. Older neighborhoods are torn down to be replaced by uniform apartment blocks with increasingly smaller living spaces. Commuting distances lengthen and city residents often live in almost total isolation from their neighbors. Congestion, pollution, and an increasing disparity in income belie the sparkling commercial districts in the cities' centers.

This exhibition is supported by the Nolen Endowed fund for Asian Art Initiatives.
