Museum's Collecting Art of Asia Wraps Up Four-Month Run

This weekend is the last chance for alumnae visiting campus for reunion, and others in the community, to view Collecting Art of Asia, the Museum of Art's commemorative exhibition celebrating a century of acquiring Asian artworks, closing on Sunday, May 26. The Consul General of Japan, Akira Muto (pictured), recently took in the exhibition, which includes the collection's original works, a dozen panels given in 1913 by collector Charles Lang Freer.

Senior Hurdler Heads to NCAAs

May 19 was a good day for Kirsten Silfvenius '13. Not only did she walk across the stage at commencement and receive her Smith College diploma. She also learned she's been invited to compete in the 2013 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place this weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. Silfvenius will compete in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.

History of Alumnae, One Card at a Time

One look at one card can provide an overview of an entire life. Multiply that times thousands of cards contained in the archive of class notes published in the Smith Alumnae Quarterly, stored in the Alumnae House, and you have a comprehensive historical trove of Smith alumnae, from 1906 to the early 2000s.

Reunion Faculty Lectures Wide-ranging

Safe drinking water, Asian art, foster care, status of the teaching profession, and art and colonialism are a few of the topics addressed by Smith faculty during a series of lectures during both reunion weekends. In Insight: The History of Live Music

What is it about live music that brings people from different backgrounds, tastes and demographics together? Steve Waksman, professor of music, is attempting to answer that and other questions in his book tentatively titled Live Music in America: A History, 1850-2000, which kicks off with details about an American tour in 1850 by world renowned opera singer Jenny Lind.

Reunion Offers Deeper Alumnae Engagement

Through a range of topics addressed in a series of free lectures by Smith faculty during both reunion weekends (May 17-19 and May 24-26), alumnae are afforded a glimpse of today's student academic experience.
