Free Family Day: Colorful

  • Free Admission ALL DAY Free Snacks Hands-on activities from 12:30-3:30pm
    Explore art + science + math through color and celebrate SCMA’s painting by Frank Stella that’s the length of a yellow school bus!

    SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

    1pm, 2pm, 3pm Follow the Color interactive tour—Meet in Lobby Join our student museum educators to experience color throughout the galleries.

    2:30pm Expandable Brass Band—Atrium Loud, raucous, and full of fun, the Expandable Brass Band is dedicated to spreading joyful music with both traditional and unconventional marching band instruments.

    Ongoing, 12:30–3:30pm

    Welcome + Membership Table – First Floor, outside Sacerdote Gallery Stop by to pick up a schedule of activities and enter the raffle for a free dual level membership.

    Free Snacks—Atrium

    Spinning Tops—Atrium Create a pattern with colorful markers on a paper circle and discover how colors mix as your top spins round and round in this optical illusion.

    Collaborative Mural—L18 Studio Classroom, Lower Level How did Frank Stella create such vibrant colors and geometric designs? Find out for yourself while drawing with yardsticks, protractors & other tools, mixing paint, and contributing to shared canvas in this exploration of color theory and math art.

    Magical Math - Nixon Gallery, Second Floor Drop in to the Nixon Gallery to check out Third Order Magic Square for Deep Sleep by Xylor Jane. Use your powers of observation to explore how the artist Xylor Jane plays with color + pattern in her work, then use colored pencils + grid paper or board games to play with these ideas yourself!

    Fast Fancy Faces by Dazzle Day Face Painters—L19 Classroom, Lower Level **** Become a walking work of art with a custom design inspired by SCMA’s Frank Stella painting!

    Book Nook + Take a Break Space—Lower Level lobby Drop in and take a break with our collection of picture books themed around color.
