Based on loans from the Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, CT), Smith College Museum of Art is pleased to present a pair of exhibitions in 2011-2012 that will explore Chinese and Japanese art and culture. SCMA is one of six partner college and university museums invited to develop exhibitions from Yale’s extensive holdings.
The two exhibitions at SCMA, Transcending Boundaries and Pursuing Beauty, are part of Yale University’s Collection-Sharing Initiative, funded by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This project is based on the belief that, while digital technologies have increased access to museum collections, there is no substitute for original works of art, which contain a wealth of information about history and human culture.
Organized by guest curator Fan Zhang, Freeman/ McPherson Post-Doctoral Curatorial and Teaching Fellow, the exhibitions at SCMA will support the teaching and research of Asian art at Smith throughout this year.
Additional loans for Transcending Boundaries are provided by the Allen Memorial Art Museum (Oberlin College); the Worcester Art Museum; and private collectors. Works from SCMA’s permanent collection will supplement the spring exhibition.
