Jane Chace Carroll Curator of Asian Art, 2015–2024
As the inaugural Jane Chace Carroll Curator of Asian Art, Yao established SCMA as a space for sustained and nuanced consideration of the complexity of Asia’s history and the rich artistic heritage of its diverse countries and cultures. Throughout her nine-year tenure, she pursued new avenues in collecting, curated fascinating installations and special exhibitions, and played a key role in strategic planning and several collaborative collections reinstallation projects. Yao brought attention and care to building strong relationships within the museum staff, across campus, and among the Five Colleges, becoming a valued partner to faculty and mentor to students.
Associate Director of Learning and Interpretation
Nina Peláez left her role as Associate Director of Learning and Interpretation in January 2024 to take the position of Associate Director for Story and Experience at The Merwin Conservancy on Maui. In just under two years at SCMA, she moved the museum forward by partnering with student organizations to pilot new programs, relaunching SCMA’s post-baccalaureate program after a pandemic-induced hiatus and developing new interpretive strategies for the museum’s special exhibitions and galleries. Among these, she played a leadership role in planning for the reinstallation of the third-floor galleries, Worlds in Process, which was completed later in 2024.
Deputy Director
The start of 2025 brought the bittersweet news that Lily Foster was leaving the museum to take a job as a member of an operations and strategy team at the D.E. Shaw Group, a financial firm in New York City, where she worked previously. Lily joined SCMA in 2017 as Associate Director of Museum Administration and was promoted to Deputy Director in 2022. During her tenure, she played a transformative role in this newly defined position, improving the museum’s financial planning and management and playing a crucial part in helping us navigate the disruption of the pandemic. Lily led the reorganization of our front-of-house team to prioritize more equitable staffing, increased training and professional development, and improved visitor experience. In turn, she advanced our goal of creating a more accessible and inclusive museum that contributes meaningfully to the experience of Smith students and provides a welcoming gateway to the campus for our community.
Associate Director of Communications
Tiffany Bradley wrapped up her tenure as Associate Director of Communications in March 2025, just shy of her third anniversary at SCMA. She joined the museum in the spring of 2022 as we were still in the process of reopening after the pandemic. Tiffany played a crucial role in rebuilding museum attendance, implementing a strategic communications plan that announced the introduction of free admission for all visitors in 2023 and resulted in museum visitation returning to pre-pandemic levels.
