SCMA is free and open to all!
Join us from 4–8 p.m. for an evening of art, making, and community at the Smith College Museum of Art.  
Galleries are open until 8pm.

From 4-6 p.m. Visit Hillyer Art Library to enjoy an installation of children's art from The Smith College Center for Early Childhood Education at Fort Hill. This program is presented as part of Northampton's Week of the Young Child Celebration.
 

From 5:30–6 p.m. Gallery Talk with artist Gina Siepel: One Half Log, Divided into a Chair and Scraps, and To Understand a Tree
Targan Gallery, Lower Level

Gina Siepel will discuss the process and concepts informing One Half Log, Divided into a Chair and Scraps, currently on view at SCMA, in the context of their long-term project To Understand a Tree, made as an artist-in-residence at the MacLeish Field Station between 2019-2024.

Step away from the scroll and spend real time with art. Visit SCMA for a self-guided tour of five artworks selected by Aprile Gallant, Mary Walcott Keyes 1931 Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs and Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, for International Slow Art Day. Pick up a list of the selected artworks at the front desk, find them in the galleries, and spend 5–10 minutes with each. Afterwards, meet up to share observations and reactions—bring a friend and your curiosity. All welcome.

Join artist, designer, and educator Jeff Kasper and the Design Thinking Initiative (DTI) for a day-long workshop that blends mindful reflection, dialogue, and hands-on making.

Attend a daylong art celebration at Smith! This year’s festival features over 40 events across campus from hands-on workshops to performances and exhibitions. Learn more here. 

At the Smith College Museum of Art join a Student Educator tour (1:15 p.m.) & view a Campus School sixth-graders' pop-up. 

Introduced in 2024, the Smith Office for the Arts (SOFA) presents Smith Arts Day, a daylong celebration of the artistic and creative community at Smith College that brings the arts together—across disciplines and across campus. SOFA invites community members to attend performances, exhibitions, workshops, art-making activities, and more.

All events are free and open to everyone; all ages are welcome. No registration is required. Look for Arts Day flags on campus; schedules and maps will be available at each event.

Join Emma Chubb, Charlotte Feng Ford ’83 Curator of Contemporary Art, for an interactive exploration of Don’t mind if I do. Blending close looking, hands-on engagement, and open dialogue, this in-person program offers insight into the exhibition’s playful and accessible design.

This program is for SCMA Friends. Smith students are members and are welcome to attend. Emma Chubb will offer an introduction at 1 p.m., after which guests are invited to explore the exhibition and join in conversation and questions.

The first 10 attendees will receive a coupon for a free drink at Tunic Coffee. Grab a latte with a new friend and talk about your experience at SCMA!

Explore the stunning exhibition Crafting Worlds: Japanese Decorative Arts from the 18th through 21st Centuries with Clara Cho Wun Ma, Jane Chace Carroll Associate Curator of Asian Art, and student research assistant Josie Wong ‘26. Through close looking at Japanese lacquer, bamboo, and ceramics, you'll uncover the remarkable ways Japanese artisans have navigated—and continue to navigate—the delicate balance between honoring centuries-old traditions and forging bold new paths.

This special virtual program delves deep into Crafting Worlds, using select objects from the exhibition to reveal the compelling stories of artistic lineages, cultural identity, and the enduring power of handmade craft.

Curious where artworks hang out when they’re not on view? Join us for an SCMA Open House just for Smith students and get a behind-the-scenes peek at our collections storage. Tour the climate-controlled spaces where thousands of works live and hear from the Collections Management team about handling, housing, and conservation. Tours run approximately 40 minutes on April 29. Choose from three times: 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., or 3:00 p.m. Each tour is limited to 15 students, and spots are first-come, first-served—meet in the museum lobby. Register today to secure your place!

Join artist Felicia Griffin for an engaging workshop, available both in-person and online, and discover the joy of creating her iconic Pom-Poms. Griffin, whose work is featured in the current exhibition Don’t mind if I do (on view through June 28), invites participants to experiment with colorful yarns and cardboard tubes, exploring different hues, textures, and materials to craft what she calls “the circle within.”

Whether you’re joining at SCMA or from home, this hands-on program welcomes makers of all levels to get creative and bring their own vibrant circles to life. In-person spots are limited due to space, and participants attending on-site will enjoy popsicles from Crooked Stick Pops.
