Artist-in-Residence Program
SCMA’s Artist-in-Residence Program brings artists who are at a pivotal point in their careers to Smith College for a period of creative exploration and experimentation rooted in exchanges with faculty, staff, and students. Amanda Williams inaugurated the residency in 2019.
Abdessamad El Montassir is the SCMA Spring 2023 artist-in-residence.
The residency is tailored to each artist and lasts between one and two months. SCMA provides access to Smith’s unique artistic, intellectual, and institutional resources to support the artist in the conception and development of a body of work while in residence. SCMA publishes a book about the residency in collaboration with the artist following the completion of their residency.
SCMA is committed to working with each artist to design a residency that is inclusive of all family situations. An integral part of Smith College, which is one of the largest historically women’s colleges in the United States, SCMA recognizes that family obligations, particularly childcare, all too often prevent artists who are also primary caregivers from participating in artist residencies in ways that disproportionately affect women.
The residency is by invitation only; SCMA does not review unsolicited materials or proposals.
SCMA’s Artist-in-Residency Program is made possible by the trust and support of Amy Shepherd Weinberg '82; Robin Bracken Villa '65; and the Contemporary Artist Project fund.
