Poetry reading: Lee Roripaugh

The Smith College Poetry Center and SCMA are pleased to present Lee Roripaugh, poet laureate of South Dakota. Roripaugh, a second-generation Japanese American, created a series of portraits in Beyond Heart Mountain (1999), in the voices of Japanese American internees at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming. In Year of the Snake (2004), she explored issues of mixed-race identity, myths, Japanese fairy tales, and metaphors of transformation.

"Panel discussion: Reclaiming Munio Makuuchi, an American artist" is about the relevance of the artist's poetry and prints nearly 20 years after his death. Speakers include Curator Aprile Gallant, Professor Floyd Cheung, Printer Andrew Balkin and art historian Margo Machida.

Free Opening Weekend for Black Refractions

We will be celebrating the opening weekend of Black Refractions: Highlights from the Studio Museum in Harlem by offering free admission all weekend

The opening weekend will also feature our annual Free Community Day on January 18 (details below)

Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem will be on view at SCMA from January 17–April 12, 2020

Free Admission ALL DAY with activities from 11:00–3:30pm. All Ages Welcome! Join us for a Free Community Day to launch the opening of the exhibition Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem (on view January 17–April 12, 2020).

Activities include gallery talks by Springfield youth, drop-in art making workshop, photo booth, musical performance by Smith Campus School Chorus, and more!
