supporting the mary walcott keyes 1931 curator of prints, drawings and photographs
George and Elaine Keyes funded an endowment for the Mary Walcott Keyes 1931 Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. Elaine, along with her husband, George, who is curator emeritus at the Detroit Institute of Arts, have long been stewards of the arts. Elaine and George were both impressed with the museum’s many accomplishments, particularly with SCMA’s mission to ensure increased access to the arts and celebrate accomplished and talented creators.
This newly created position, which is currently held by Aprile Gallant, was announced in the spring of 2022. An endowed chair provides continuity for preserving and expanding SCMA’s works on paper, a key part of the collection. This position elevates the museum’s reputation, ensures that greater educational goals can be accomplished and offers an enduring tribute to the Keyeses’ philanthropy.
SCMA supporters understand that access to art and ideas are essential to a Smith education and contribute to a well-lived life. With the Keyeses’ generous gift, the museum can further its mission, development and outreach. SCMA is privileged to be the steward of a legacy that continues George’s distinguished service to the museum field and honors his mother at her alma mater.
